Why a New Party?
Many people have been asking if a new party is the way to go. After all, in many ways, we have it pretty good in Alberta. We have experienced reasonably good government, our finances, while much worse than they could be, are not so bad by international standards, and people continue to want to live here. Shouldn’t we be happy with what we’ve got?
We don’t think so. We came to the idea of Renew Alberta by asking three simple questions, and we invite you to do so as well:
- Can we conceive of a better Alberta?
We think we can. We spend more than any other province, but we don’t have a much healthier or wealthier or happier population. We don’t have the best universities in Canada, or the most outstanding recreational facilities, or the most incredible health care system. This is one of the most blessed places on earth, but we could do so much better for all Albertans.
- Do we think others dream of a better Alberta?
In coffee shops and churches, schools and office watercoolers, Albertans are talking about the future. We are looking for a positive alternative, one we can entrust with the responsibility of governing, but also one that speaks to our values – not old values of fear and division, but new ones of respect, acceptance, and possibility – knowing that we can be great together. Sixty per cent of us didn’t vote in the last election, but that doesn’t mean we don’t care. Of course we do. But we need leaders who speak with us, and speak to our needs and our values.
- Can the existing political parties get us there?
We don’t think so. We think a change in government is needed, and the existing opposition parties will not get us there. It's time to speak the truth - the Progressive Conservatives have demonstrated that they are neither socially or fiscally responsible and the traditional opposition parties are incapable of forming government. We believe that the Wildrose Alliance speaks to values and policies that are far from what most Albertans want for themselves and their children. In our view, a new party is the best way forward.
